Nassir Ghaemi, MD, MPH

Professor of Psychiatry, and Director, Mood Disorders Program, Tufts Medical Center

S. Nassir Ghaemi, MD, MPH, is a psychiatrist and researcher with expertise in depression and bipolar illness, and training in philosophy and public health. Dr. Ghaemi has published over 200 scientific articles or book chapters and over half a dozen books, and is Associate Editor of Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica. He also is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Ghaemi obtained his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, and completed his medical internship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, a psychiatry residency at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, and a research psychopharmacology fellowship in mood disorders at MGH. Dr. Ghaemi also received a Master of Arts degree in philosophy from Tufts University in 2001 and a Master of Public Health degree in the Clinical Effectiveness Program from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2004.

Dr. Ghaemi’s books include most recently On Depression: Drugs, Diagnosis and Despair in the Modern World (Johns Hopkins, 2013). Previously, he wrote A First-Rate Madness (Penguin Press, 2011). Other academic books include A Clinician's Guide to Statistics and Epidemiology in Mental Health (Cambridge University Press, 2009), Rise and Fall of the Biopsychosocial Model (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009), and The Concepts of Psychiatry (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2003), among others.
