Josepha A. Cheong, MD is the Assistant Chief of Psychiatry for the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (Nashville and Murfreesboro VA Medical Centers) and Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the University Of Florida College Of Medicine. Dr. Cheong primary areas of clinical focus are medical education, geriatric, emergency, and consult-liaison psychiatry. She is a member of the ACGME Psychiatry RRC and its Executive Subcommittee. In January 2017, Dr. Cheong began her term as a Director on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Primary areas of education focus are program development, post-graduate education, ethics, and social media. Memory and affective disorders, neuropsychopharmacology, and management of agitation and aggression are within her clinical expertise. Dr. Cheong is highly regarded as a teacher and has received numerous awards at regional, state and national levels as well as a sought-after educational speaker and lecturer. 

Teacher of the Award in 1996, 1999, and 2002. Dr. Cheong received the most prestigious honor at the UF COM, the Hippocratic Oath Award, in 1996 and 2001. In addition, she is one of only seven honorees to receive the UF College of Medicine Distinguished Teacher Award. The University of Florida has recognized Dr. Cheong with the competitive university-wide 2006-2007 Distinguished Faculty Award. Dr. Cheong is active in numerous national professional and advocacy organizations – most recently, she has served as the Chair of the Council on Aging of the American Psychiatric Association and is the elected Secretary (2011-2013) for the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP). She is the recipient of the 2011 AAGP Educator of the Year Award. In keeping with her interest in graduate and post-graduate education and program development, she served as the 2012-2013 Chair of the Am Psychiatric Association Scientific Program Committee for the 2009 and 2013 APA Annual Meeting – the world’s largest psychiatry professional organization CME meeting (attendance 13K -20K registrants). Dr. Cheong has served as member of the University of Florida Department of Emergency Medicine, NASA Medical Support Team for the Space Shuttle launches and landings at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida, including STS-135, the final mission. Outside of medicine, she is a professional performance photographer and has toured with multiple artists, including Brooks and Dunn, ZZ Top, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean.
